Gear Train Wind Turbine

This project takes the gear train to a greater level. Using a simulation of Explore a Wind Turbine, students will explore the connections of the inner components to both a Land-Based Gearbox Turbine and a Direct-Drive Offshore Turbine. Students will apply calculations of gear ratios with speed to actual wind turbines models that were discovered in the simulator. They engineer to fix a broken gear train on a wind turbine in the Onshape Cad program. An enrichment of making the wind turbine by assembling the Vex platform parts on Onshape is available too. They finish the project by discovering the career outlook to the growing field of wind energy industry.

This video was taken by Ashley Fore to show the Gear Train on the windmill working in Onshape. This is the beginning lesson to some more gear train experiences that are yet to come.

Per the field testing of the lesson, the following feedback was given:

Plus: What did you find helpful/positive with the lesson?

  • Good information

  • Helpful graphics

  • Students found it to be interactive and fun

Delta:

  • Pictures can be bigger

  • Some of the words were big and hard for students to understand. Need a vocab sheet/review

  • Pace was a little fast my students needed more than the allotted time for each assignment

The authors (Ashley, and Ryan) amended, and fixedthe following based on the field testing:

  • Adjusted every image of the Powerpoint
  • The last slide is a vocabulary slides of new words.
  • Notes to the lesson plans by making on shape two days. Also, feedback was given to the teacher who tested becuase they were listening to the recordings on 2x speed.
